Stylized Portraits

Seventh graders reviewed facial proportions but this time, they stylized their self-portraits to communicate more about themselves than just what they look like. It was the first time that I required them to use a mirror and I insisted it be a self-portrait. They really enjoyed being able to pick each other out in their work and talk about personalities.

Blending with oil pastels was also something they have struggled with in the past. Color demo day began with a brief primer on HOW to color with oil pastels. I’m really pleased with the variety of skin tones and value they were able to achieve.
